My family was so glad that we chose island kayaking adventure. Actually Natalie @ Brasas y Cultura gave us your info to schedule this trip. The guides were all excellent & remained professional & kind, especially to the inexperienced paddlers. It was a pretty bright moon, the guides did everything to make sure we all saw the glow. The guide Thalia was very personable. She was so nice to my 2 daughters and me & my husband. Wish we had met Kenny the guide that night. Kayaking through the mangroves to the lagoon was an amazing & a beautiful experience. You must book this trip! read less

Great time We had a great time and the kayaking was so much fun. Although we thought the biolumnescent bay was going to be more pronounced, it was still amazing under the tarp we were provided. Highly recommend this adventure.

FYI, you're going with a big group (generally strangers). Some people are terrible kayakers. If you are a good kayaker, you're going to have to be okay just chilling and not getting frustrated.
The bioluminescence is very cool. It's not like those dolled up pics you see of a glowing blue lagoon - expect sparkling stars in the water.
Another FYI - restaurants close at 9pm, so make sure you hustle on the back-end so you can get dinner. Or just eat before. read lessJoseph L5/05/2021Fantastic!! Don't miss this opportunity when you are in Puerto Rico. Beautiful, and fun. Guides are knowledgeable and funny. A true lifetime memory!!!

We went out around 6:30pm and I recommend this time over the later time as there is still daylight when you head out in the kayaks through the mangroves. The guides provided an excellent, thorough instruction on how to kayak and the evenings plan, but it was very helpful to get the feel for the kayak and mangrove before you are in the pitch black of night. Be sure to bring your patience as several other kayakers in the group seemed to forget the instruction on how to stop their kayaks - so much so that it felt like bumper kayaks at times. Once through the mangroves and into the lagoon, the guides provided a tarp to put over the kayaks so you could see the bioluminescence better when you waved your hands through the water. This was really helpful, because as even though it was a dark night with minimal moonlight, the bioluminescence is not as bright as the pictures online (they are photoshopped) and making it extra dark made a huge difference in seeing the glow. Even with the bioluminescence not being as bright as it is online it was still really exciting to see what looked like little blue fireflies in the water. The guides took pictures of each kayak before heading back, and posted them on Facebook for free. Kayaking through the mangroves in the dark is a great adventure on its own that I definitely recommend, so the bioluminescence is just the magical cherry on the cake at that point. They provided bug spray and a small snack afterwards. Both were nice touches (and definitely use the bug spray!) read less

We saw signs on the beaches through a tour company for the same tour we took for $30 more than we paid. If you need a bite to eat beforehand, there is a guy who grills chicken and has rice and beans for $6 a plate right next to the booth where you check in. It was the best food we ate all trip. The Kayaking is not too hard even if you are the parent of kids in their twenties and not in the best shape LOL. Kayaking through the mangroves was actually a highlight and I recommend the earlier trip so you can see. Also, bring bug spray. Even though we sprayed, we still got lots of bites. The kayaking was a lot of fun, seeing the bioluminesence was cool, but after a few minutes of stirring them up and thinking they are pretty cool, you are ready to return. I'm glad I saw it, but don't think I need to do it again. read less

In regards to Island Kayaking Adventure and their guides, I was more than satisfied. They had quality equipment, gave us a decent explanation of what to expect/the itinerary for the night, spent time educating us about bioluminecense/mangroves, AND took pictures for us. This can be a stressful/scary experience for some and the guides did an excellent job communicating and keeping us safe through a pitch black tunnel full of roots and occasional flying fish.
As for the biolumenecense, it was average at best. I was happy to check it off my list but wasn't as amazed as I thought I would be. We were told that they had recently experienced a "mass die off" of the plankton and that it was currently in the middle stages of repopulating itself (this was in January of 2016). It's also important to be aware of the moon phase and any other light pollution risks as this can change your experience.
Lastly, PICK YOUR PARTNER WISELY! This tour group uses kayaks that seat two; one person steering and one doing the rest of the work. You are doing this in a pitch black tunnel of mangrove trees, with fish jumping in and out of your kayak, all while other groups are passing you. If you are with someone who is faint of heart or doesn't think quick on their feet, you may very well end up in the water. It's shallow enough to stand up but still not an experience I feel many would enjoy. If you're thinking of proposing to your significant other, take them on this tour first and see how they do. :p read lessKatie W1/25/2018 -

I was a bit wary since we booked last minute and all of the other companies were booked up, but Island Kayaking Adventure was fantastic. After a quick safety briefing we climbed into out two man kayaks and headed out into the water. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE GOING ON A DARK NIGHT WITH LITTLE MOONLIGHT! It was nearly pitch black, so we followed the glowstick on the kayak in front of us. The path through the mangrove trees was good for a laugh as everyone was bumping into trees and the kayaks around them. About half an hour in, the water began to glow as we paddled. By the time we emerged into the bay, the water around us was bright. You can't get out of the kayak as your body oils are bad for the ecosystem, but you're free to paddle and splash your hands. I'm not a big kayaker, but even when my arms were tired I didn't want to stop paddling because it was so beautiful! read less

It was smooth checking in, very organized and on point. They even had plenty of bug spray for us to use and they store your stuff for free. They were on time, funny, very knowledgeable and safe. We never felt pressured to keep up and they were always nearby to help if we got stuck, which my son and I often did. Lol At the end of the trip they had snacks and we had full use of the facilities bathrooms and showers. This was mine and my sons first experience and we had soo much fun!! I was very thankful for the guides Daniel and Diego! My son and I kept getting stuck in the sand and the trees and they were great about towing us along and then encouraging us to try again on our own! They always stayed nearby and were helpful in telling us which way to paddle. The hardest part for me was remembering that if I wanted to go right, I needed to paddle left and vise versa. They Gave us plenty of time to enjoy the bioluminescent organisms in the water!! I had never seen the water glow like that! We would definitely do this again with them and would recommend them to everybody. read less

Everyone has been talking about it with awe and excitement since! There were a few who had never kayaked before, and they were shown extra care and attention and were so proud they concurred fears and had the opportunity to experience overcoming fears with someone by their side. The bioluminescent bay was exciting to see and looked like glitter and sparks in the water. It was interesting to hear about the impact of hurricane Maria and the effects on the bioluminescent bay plankton.
You have to learn to communicate well with your kayak partner and was a great team building experience for us.
For those looking for details: yes you get wet from waist down. Bring a towel and change of clothes. If you go at sunset, bring bug spray - we used bug spray and no one came away with bites. Yes, it can be tiring paddling back, but you will be proud of what you can accomplish. Nestor and his crew will take good care of you! read lessWONDERandWONDER7/21/2019

I found them through my hotel's travel guide. I had initial hesitations given the crappy website, little in the way of references, and my initial conversations with one of the guides over the phone (asked me for my credit card). I was able to book a trek for two on a day's notice (in mid-August).
The canal and the bay are gorgeous, but I'll separate that from the actual company.
We were able to find the tour group rather easily; the website featured super-helpful directions. We arrived about an hour early, and we were offered a slot on the earlier tour group without asking. Cool! The instruction was quick (kayaking isn't brain surgery), the tour guides effectively reigned in the twenty-plus sea-unworthy tourists, and after everything was over we all got free fruit and water. Score.
